This article is about the Paraguayan respirator. For the Belgian respirator, see AGM (Belgium).
The AGM was the mask produced in Paraguay during the Chaco War.
Overview[]
The facepiece is made of cowhide and cellulose, while the canister was a tin can with activated charcoal and possibly other materials. The mask was handmade by the Paraguyan Red Cross in August 1932.
History[]
After the breakout of the Chaco War between Bolivia and Paraguay in 1932, both governments feared that the other faction would deploy chemical weapons on the battlefield. Bolivia ended up importing the Leder B-Maske. The responsibility of creating protective masks for Paraguay fell on the Paraguayan Red Cross which produced the AGM mask with available materials. The mask was made in the city of Asuncion by a team of nurses. The AGM mask was never used in a real gas attack as neither side deployed chemical weapons on the battlefield.
