AI-1M variant from 1983
The АИ-1 - Аптечка Индивидуальная (Individual First Aid Kit) was issued to Soviet soldiers of the Soviet Armed Forces (Вооружённые Силы - ВС СССР) and later Russian soldiers of the Russian Armed Forces (Вооружённые Силы - ВС РФ).
This page will cover the entire evolution from the original AI from the 1960s to the current issue APPI Block № 2. The very first kit was just called the AI with no number but due to the later variants and the civilian counterpart, the AI-2, the military issue models are normally always referred to as AI-1.
The AI kits were intended to provide Soviet, and later Russian, soldiers with adequate treatment incase they were exposed to Nuclear, Biological & Chemical Agents. While the kits are mainly geared towards NBC warfare, some items in the kit, namely the Promedol, are also useful for conventional wounds. Due to this, these kits were issued to Soviet soldiers serving in Afghanistan in the 1980s, with most soldiers removing the NBC specific items and adding extra medical items of use to them.
The AI through to the AI-1M was meant to be carried in the right exterior pocket of the Obr.69 & Obr.73 uniform and the right chest pocket of the Obr.88 uniform.
The AI-1 alongside the IPP-1 Bandage, Tourniquet, Water Purification Tablets & IPP-8 Decontamination Kit made up the full individual medical kit each Soviet soldier would carry in the 1970s and 1980s, all of which was kept in uniform pockets except for the IPP-8 which went in the gas mask bag.
The AIv-01 (АИв-01) First Aid Kit was introduced in the early 2000s which took all of the medical items out of the pockets and into a more convenient Flora camouflage pouch. In 2011 the APPI was introduced which was a much more modern and updated first aid kit and, as of 2023, is still the current issue kit for the Russian military.
