Gas Mask and Respirator Wiki

The Swiss C-maske was designed to be an industrial gas mask but it was used in the Civil Defence during the Second World War as well. It is based on the GM33.

Overview[]

The facepiece is made of rubber with metal assemblies holding the most likely triplex glass eyepieces in place. The valve house is made of metal as well and holds the "glitter" type exhale valve, which is on top of the 40mm intake. The mask features a five-point adjustable harness. The later, post war models are made of black rubber.

Filter[]

The C-Filter is the licensed version of the Dräger Nr.455 filter.

Kit[]

The kit contained the facepiece, filter, carrying canister, anti-fogging soap, short manual and little piece of fabric.

External information[]

Originally the mask was made in Zürich by FEGA Werk A.G. but later a second factory was opened in Lausanne to increase production numbers. The mask was intended for the civilian population and for local forces. It was also used for air raid protection

Original price was 16,00 CHF in 1939 while the reduced price for mass purchase was only 8 CHF, which was a very low price, for comparasion the B-Maske was 11,60 CHF.

Post-war model[]

After the war, these masks were made in late 1940's up until it was succeeded by the 1960's made for civil defence, older masks were refurbished, however most parts were made during the war even the kit, except the filter and straps which were used to mostly replace alongside with black rubber. These masks had similar straps just like its successor, the SM67. The production continued to be used for a while after the war and were later used in chemical plants and fire departments.
