As World War 1 has ended, during the Interwar period, gas masks continued to be in production with major design overhauls and new materials.

While the 1925 Geneva Protocol, signed by all forces after the war, had put up a ban on the use of chemical and biological weapons, this did not cover the production, storage or transfer of such weapons, not until the 1972 BWC and the 1993 CWC.

Despite all the actions taken diplomatically, the threat of chemical and biological warfare remained a persistent concern for future wars, driving ongoing research and development in this field. In multiple occasions, the protocol was infringed and chemical weapons were used.
