The DM4 rebreather mask was designed in 1973 by a Slovak company called Chirana, and was basically a modernization of the earlier DM3 rebreather mask.

Overview[]

The facepiece is made out of a fairly low quality rubber which is quite prone to rip, whilst the peripheral seal is made out of leather. The mask features a single circular glass lens, into which a wiper with a leather wiping surface is built in. It is operated by hand from the outside. The mask has a standard rebreather thread. The head harness is made out of rubber (as opposed to the cloth harness on the DM3). It's a 5 point harness in which all the straps, except for the middle one, are adjustable, and connect to a rubber headpad with the company's logo. The straps themselves are glued and riveted to the facepiece, however the way it's made puts quite a lot of tension on the facepiece, thus causing usually the two lower straps to tear off. The mask also features a neck strap made out of black fabric, which connects to the two bottommost strap points. The mask has a valveless rubber oral nasal cup with a built in chin rest, permanently attached to the mask via the metal thread. Marking wise, the mask is marked from the inside on the bottom right cheek, with the series number, and a date of production. Other than that, there's "DM 4" stamped on the metal clamp which holds the lens in.
