== Filter ==
The GM-54 was issued with two main types of filters. The most common variant used is a slightly improved version of the filter issued with the GM-30 mask, the filter is small lightweight and designed similar to modern gas mask filters with the ridges on the bottom. This mask was also issued with a less common filter if issued outside of Germany, this filter is colored grey and is much larger in height than the more common variant. This filter also did not include the bottom ridges and resembled an older filter variant.

The GM-54 was created by Drager in the early 1950s as an alternative to the VM-44 used previously in the ending years of Nazi Germany because of the need of a Cold War civilian gas mask. To reduce costs of the masks, Germany used a slightly modified version of the GM-30 as it was one of the cheapest mask designs ever produced as it was not made of full unlike previous civilians such as the GM-38 and [[VM-37]].

== Surplus Market ==

The GM-54 is quite common to find on the Surplus Market, due to the cheap material used on the GM-54 masks they tend to age extremely quickly and by the time they reach the surplus market they have already decayed more than most masks from the period. A simple functional GM-54 with some decay is worth about 50-60 US Dollars, whilst a mint GM-54 can run into the hundred range.

Overview

The GM-54 was a small light-weight gas mask similar in design of that of the GM-30 and the GM-38. The GM-54 is built from a canvas material coated in a grayish green rubber coating, similar to previous Nazi military mask designs. The mask uses a simple connected intake and outtake valve attached to the front of the mask, with a metal cover covering the outtake valve to prevent damage and decay. It uses a simple five piece head cloth harness with a bottom harness strap to tighten the mask for a better seal, some models also included carry straps. The lenses are attached by a large metal crimp on outer pieces, a design carried over from the previous GM masks.

The mask was issued in a large metal canteen as most GM masks were, with a simple carry strap attached for mobility.
