The GT-6 (Russian: Гражданский Тип —"Civilian Type") was a civilian gas mask with a threaded filter.

Mask overview[]

The GT-6 mask was made of rubberized fabric. In its upper part there was a headrest made of fabric, with which the mask was fixed on the head. Rubber bands were sewn along the edges of the headrest to make the mask fit more tightly. There was a wide rubber obturator inside the mask. A long ribbon was sewn to the edges of the mask, which was wrapped around the neck and allowed the removed gas mask to be on the neck in readiness for quick putting on and use. the mask was made in four sizes. The size of the mask was indicated by a number on the chin part of the mask.  The valve box contained both the inhalation and exhalation valves. The inhalation valve had the same device as in the O-8 mask. The filter box was screwed directly into the screw part of the valve box. Thus, the GT-6 gas mask did not structurally have a corrugated connecting tube. According to the descriptions set out in S.A. Toropov's book "Industrial gas masks and respirators" (1940), the use of the GT-6 mask was preferable in cases where it was necessary to cover the entire face from exposure to dust, splashes and other. At the same time, it was pointed out that the mask was not intended for work in which corrosive substances may be exposed, since the fabric part of the mask (in the form of cotton fabric) could easily be destroyed by them.

Filter[]

The GT-6 filter was a simple cylinder with a thread at the top and a series of holes at the bottom. There are only a few of these filters in existence.

According to the descriptions set out in S.A. Toropov's book "Industrial Gas Masks and Respirators" (1940), the GT-6 filter box, unlike most gas mask boxes used in the USSR at that time, had small dimensions and a cylindrical shape. The bottom of the box is mesh. The first layer in the box is a smoke filter. Next is a layer of chemical absorber, followed by a layer of activated carbon. The box has no valves and was designed for use with a mask having a valve box. According to the design features, the filter was designed to protect against vapors of organic substances (gasoline, kerosene, oil vapor, etc.), some acid gases, chlorine, phosgene, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, as well as fine dust and toxic fumes.

Preserved gas mask samples[]

According to data from open Internet sources, in April 2013, the GT-6 sample was in excellent condition at the Museum of the Radiation Chemical and Biological Protection Forces (RHBZ in Russian) in Moscow. However, it is worth noting that it was mistakenly designated as TTS (Tver type secret).

It also states that the mask of the gas mask was made of fabric. The years of use of gas masks of this type are also indicated there - 1926-28.

Currently, the Museum of the Troops of Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection functions as a structural unit of the 27th Scientific Center of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation named after Academician Zelinsky.
