The Austro-Hungarian army is known as K.u.K. (Imperial and Royal Army - in Austrian: Kaiserlich und Königlich Landwehr, shortened version: K. u.nK.; in Hungarian: Császári és Királyi Hadsereg) used many rebreathers before gas was even used in the First World War. Later these were mostly replaced by German-made GM15 and later by 17M masks but some remained in service as rebreathers can be used where the gas masks are not suitable.
