The Maska typu cywilnego (Polish - civilian type gas mask) or better known as Polish GP-4 was made for civil defense use in the 1950s (in the 50s in Poland the civil defence was named Terenowa Obrona Przeciwlotnicza).
Overview[]
A civil type gas mask consists of:
- Facepiece with hose
- GP-4 filter
- carrying bag
The face part of the mask with the connecting tube is made of rubber shaped in the shape of a face. In the lower part there is a valve chamber in which valves: inhale and exhale valves are mounted. The valve chamber is used for bidirectional air movement. A connecting tube made of corobed rubber is attached to the valve chamber. The mask has a six point head harness.
Mask Sizes[]
The polish GP-4 was produced in 5 sizes: No. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. These numbers are embossed on the inside of the face part of the mask, in the upper part between the glasses.
Bag[]
The kits came with a light brown bag fastened with a button, it contains two pockets. One is for the mask, and the bigger one is for the filter. Has a waist strap (made of string).
The differences between the ML mask[]
In the civilian type mask, dark brown and pink rubber were used, while in the production of ML masks, light green rubber was used. There is a noticeable difference in the size of the face part of the masks and the length of the tubes.
Use[]
The polish GP-4 gas masks were used in civil defense. However, these masks were used sporadically during civil defense exercises. Gp-4 masks were gradually replaced by SzM-41 masks. The last known photos of the use of the GP-4 mask are from 1964-1965. Later the masks were preserved and left in warehouses of civil defence.
