Mask overview[]

SzM-41 was produced in five sizes - 0, 1, 2, 3, 4. It's base was the Soviet ShM-41 mask (ШМ-41). The universal hood mask is an individual protective device designed to protect the respiratory tract. The mask consists of a hood part adjusted in a specific way to the individual characteristics of the user. It features a short valve chamber with an angled screw port and a single exhale valve. It was replaced in 60's with an SzM-41M.

Characteristics[]

In contrast to the Soviet masks, the Polish SzM-41 has a valve chamber painted in a dark green color, or in some masks a dark grayish green.

The rubber hood of the gas mask is made of thick rubber, less stretchy than that used in later masks such as SzM-41M.

The Polish bag is made in the style of the Soviet one, but it is made of stronger materials. The kit itself is almost identical to the Soviet MO-4 kit. Except this one is Polish and it has a bag made of lighter canvas, its hose is also coated in a lighter canvas.

Use in army and civil defense[]

The SzM-41 gas mask was used from the 1950s to the end of the 1960s in the Polish People's Army, replacing the ShM-1 mask that arrived in Poland with Soviet supplies. SzM-41 gas masks in Civil Defense lasted much longer. They appeared during exercises in the 1970s. SzM-41 gas masks in Civil Defense lasted much longer. They appeared during exercises in the 1970s.
