The MF-1 (generally known as TF-1)is a Chinese industrial gas mask. It is also known as MJ-4001 by Tangshan Puda, and HYM-M08 by Shandong Ningyang Hongyuan Protective Products Co., Ltd. It used both in industry and 'Renfang' Civil Air Defense (not to be confused with 'Minfang' Civil Defense).

Mask overview

The TF-1/MF-1 is very similar to the Soviet ShM-41m, being different only in the inhale-exhale piece being made of plastic which was changed over time. First it was white, almost transparent, and later changed to gray. The eye pieces were made larger to allow better visibility. All TF-1 have been using the 40mm GOST thread since its existence (there is a rumour of the MF-1 having a "normalised thread", but said claim is false). There is a plethora of companies that make this mask. Since 2009, TF-1 masks adhere to the GB2890-2009 standard.

Size availability

Size availabilty varies in accordance to the manufacturer of the mask. The most common size is size 4. The sizing system is similar to Soviet system plus 1. Eg: size 4 TF-1 is similar to size 3 GP-5.

For Yihu brand TF-1 masks made by Shandong China Industry Protection Technology Co., Ltd., they are only available in size 3 and 4. Below is an excerpt from the TF-1 manual made by Yihu:

Measure the circumference from the top of the head along the cheeks to the lower jaw, and then measure the length along the upper jaw through the eyebrow edge to the saddle point of the ears.  Add up the lengths measured twice , and determine the mask number according to the result of the sum as shown as below:

Measurement around 98 to 100 cm = Size 3

Measurement 100 cm and above = Size 4

Changes in accordance to time

TF-1 masks have gone to constant minor changes over time. Take example the TF-1 made by Tangfeng here:

2016 Tangfeng TF-1

2021 Tangfeng TF-1

As what can be seen here, the observable differences are:

  • Slight difference of the colour of the facepiece
  • Slight difference of the colour of the valve assembly
  • Difference of the colour of the o-ring

Since both were made after 2009, the format of the quality assuarance certificate is pretty much the same.

Other differences between TF-1 masks from different manufacturers

NOTE: The TF-1 made by Tangfeng in these comparisons was made in 2021.These masks adhere to the GB2890-2009 standard.

Design of primary exhale valve

The primary exhale valve of TF-1 made by Tangfeng and Puda are similar and in fact interchangeable to other helmet style gas masks as opposed to the Yihu brand TF-1 made by Shandong China Industry Protection Technology Co., Ltd.
