The Chinese Type 59 is a licensed variant of the ShM-41m. The mask was issued to the PLA and industries.
Overview[]
The mask is a typical Soviet helmet styled rubber (the rubber has a bit lighter shade than on the ShM-41) mask. With two circular crimped-on eyepieces that can fit antifog inserts but it also has a Tissot tube system. The valve housing is made of metal which is painted dark brown or green and has a 40mm GOST thread. It was made in 5 sizes, with 0 being the smallest and 4 being the largest. There are three versions of the mask; ordinary military version, specialised military version, and industrial version. The facepiece for the ordinary military version and industrial version pretty much have the same design.
Specialised military version[]
The facepiece of the specialised military version have somewhat a "skirt" that is located at the lower jaw area to make it easier for the wearer to fit the mask with the chemical protective suit. Due to the nature of the purpose of this version, which is only used in nuclear tests and specilaised, secretive trainings, this version is EXTREMELY rare even in China.
Industrial version[]
The industrial version have several manufacturers under different brands:
- 巨龙 (Jù lóng) - Dragon = Norinco
- 东风 (Dōngfēng) - Dongfeng = Tangshan Chemical Factory
- 红旗 (Hóngqí) - Red Flag = Unknown factory
Filter (military versions only)[]
The filter itself is the Type 59 is the copy of the Soviet EO-12. The filters come in a light yellowish-brown coloured flat box aluminium alloy canister with the same coloured cap. The upper part contains activated charcoal and the lower part is made of particulate filters.
Bag and kit (military versions)[]
The bag is made of canvas. Inside there are 3 sections and 1 little pocket. The two same-sized parts are for the filter and the mask. There are 2 strips on the inner side of the filter part to fix the hose during use. The little pocket is for the antifog inserts. The big flat part is for the hose. For carrying it has an adjustable shoulder strap and an also adjustable waist strap that can be connected by tieing a knot, or by a carabiner on some bags. The shoulder strap could also have a carabiner on some bags also.
