The Type 72 was a short-lived protective mask developed for the Chinese People's Liberation Army, but ended up only used by a small franction in the industry of PRC.
History[]
As of the current moment, little is known about the history of the Type 72 Gas Mask. It is known that it was used by the industry and produced by Tangshan Chemical Factory. The mask was likely initially considered for adoption by the PLA, and is present in a handful of literatures from the time, however, no other evidence exists to prove that it was issued in any significant quantity, and despite its potential of widespread use by the armed forces and a much broader industry. The mask was primarily used for industry, and one of the current surviving examples comes from a petrochemical factory. Its design is remarkably western compared to its predecessors and may have been influenced by the Taiwanese T-62 mask, which is a copy of the German Drager Kareta Mask.
Facepiece[]
As previously referenced, the Type 72 Facepiece is largely based on the Drager Kareta Mask, albeit with a 'helmet mask' design as opposed to a conventional head harness. Like the Kareta mask, the Type 72 features a pair of triangular lenses, a centralized outlet valve with a filter intake at the 'snout' of the mask, and an in-turned peripheral face seal and inner oronasal cup remarkably similar to the Kareta Mask. The mask uses plastic clamps and glue to affix the eyelenses and all valve hardware and as such, there is virtually no metal used on the mask other than the retention screws, making the facepiece extremely light and compact.
Kit[]
No complete kits of the Type 72 mask have surfaced, but from available data, it can be ascertained that the mask was issued with a Type 69 gas mask filter. It was also issued with a hose, leading to a large coffee can filter canister, possibly one from the Type 64 series, placed in a carrier bag worn by the user.
