The Vit-Air was a licensed copy (Home Office Certification License No.3) of the Mk IV General Service Respirator. It was intended to be a competitor to Siebe-Gormans' Puretha mask (also a licensed copy of the Mk IV). The respirator wouldn't have been freely available - it had to be privately purchased.

Mask overview[]

The Vit-Air is almost indistinguishable from a regular Mk IV - its construction and dimensions are identical. The same khaki stockinette is used on both the facepiece and hose assembly.

Filter[]

Generally, the Vit-Air filter was a large, grey box filter. This grey filter is a Type E Mk V. This however represents a small timeline discrepancy. The above example's filter is dated 1942, but, the Type E Mk VI (common red filter seen on most British WW2 models) officially replaced the Type E Mk V (grey filter) in March 1940 (according to Mayer-Maguire, Baker).
